Hello Friends! I'm Becca. I'm a wife, mom, and kindergarten teacher. I'm passionate about all things home and family. I love being home with my kids, hubby, and pets. I'm not one of those people who just loves to get out of the house. I'm very social, but love being home. I'm perfectly happy being snowed in for a week, as long as I can bake, sew, play with my kids, and just enjoy homelife. I love to decorate... and redecorate. I always have a new sewing project waiting in the wings too.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I married my high school sweetheart. (Awwww.) He thinks I'm a total dork, but loves me anyway. He puts up with my decorating and constant changes around the house, and I love him for that. He knows me so well, that if I'm just sitting and looking around the room, he can read my mind and knows I'm planning my next decorating move. We have wonderful support from our family and friends. We moved into a neighborhood that my sister and my husband's sister live in. The kids have all grown up together, even going to the same school. Since my hubby and I both work, we rely on the help of our family to get our kids to and from school. Moving closer to family was the best decision we've ever made. The grandmas are pretty close by too. They are always willing to drop everything and help out with sick kids or childcare if we need it. </div>

We love our pets. I'd have more, if I could convince my better half that it was a good idea. I think I'd get chickens. Cookie is our Holland Lop. She's our most recent addition. She's a snuggler, loves to run around the house, and makes me laugh when she kicks up her heels and does a 360. She's pretty cute too, but I guess there's no such thing as an ugly bunny.</div>

Ah, Cooper. This is Cooper as a puppy. He was going to be our small dog. Our yellow lab, Riley, died when he was 11. Riley was my husband's first pet EVER. As much as he loved Riley, when it was time to find a new dog, he asked if we could find a smaller breed. We decided on a Laboradoodle. The breeder estimated that Cooper would be about 50 pounds when he was full grown. Well, Cooper weighed 50 pounds at about 4 months old and then went straight to 100! I swear, he's the size of a small horse. So much for getting a small dog! He's a sweetheart and he's full of personality.</div>

This little monkey is full of spunk. She has been that way since the day she was born. She spent her first 2 weeks of her life, at Children's Hospital, fighting for every breath. She suffered from seizures and we were told that she had probably had a stroke. The hospital staff prepared us to "care for her" since they expected she would be developmentally delayed from the lack of oxygen and her stroke. Day by day, year by year, we realized that all of that "worst case scenario stuff" was a scenario we would not know as our reality. We're glad she's a fighter and wouldn't change her spunk or personality for anything. She's a perfectly healthy (except for the cyst in her brain), normally developing, little girl. She loves gymnastics and soccer, loves listening to stories, and is absolutely giddy with delight when she sees a wedding scene on a movie.</div>

I learned a love of gardening from my mom. She always had a vegetable garden, tons of raspberries, and apple trees in our yard. I have good memories of weeding and working in the yard together, picking veggies from the garden, the smell of freshly canned fruit when I came home from school, and blowing bugs off the berries as I picked them. My mom would always end up with a huge pan of berries, at the end of berry picking, and I would only have a handful. I preferred to eat as I picked, and still do.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
My home and garden are my happy places. I love sitting on the deck, on a warm summer day, watching my kids and their friends play in the yard. First and foremost, my yard is kid and dog friendly. If I end up with a few flowers at the end of a football game, I consider it a bonus. My kids and I garden together. My hubby loves to be in the yard with us on the weekends. My son has always been a really strong kid. He lifts heavy bags of dirt and hauls them all over the yard. He spreads wood chips in the spring, and loves watching landscaping shows with me. He loves to be outside and will happily help on just about any project.</div>

My daughter loves to wander the yard, but she's in it for the pretty stuff and doesn't like to work. One of my passions is creating meaningful experiences for my kids. We always have a project in the works. My daughter loved collecting flowers from the yard, this summer, and creating art projects from the flower petals.</div>

It came as no surprise to my family, when I went off to college, that I majored in Family and Consumer Science (formerly known as Home Ec.), and earned my teaching certificate. I have endorsements in Family and Consumer Science, Early Childhood, Reading, and K-8 Education. Family and Consumer Science is a true passion of mine. I love to cook, bake, sew, and basically do anything that seems to be a "traditional" female role. </div>

FCS isn't just about cooking, baking, and being a homemaker. Family and Consumer Science provides individuals and families with knowledge that helps people make informed decisions about their well being, relationships, and resources to achieve a high quality of life. The field represents many areas, including human development, family finance, housing and interior design, food science, nutrition, wellness, textiles, apparel, family relations and dynamics, and consumer issues. I'm a member of the American Association of Family and Consumer Sciences (<a href="http://www.aafcs.org/">AAFCS</a>), as well as a member of the Washington chapter (<a href="http://www.wafcs.net/">WAFCS</a>).</div>

Family and Consumer Science is all about improving the quality of your life. In my opinion, we can improve the quality of our lives through home arts. Creating a healthy, happy, and comfortable home gives us a soft place to land at the end of the day. I want my kids to have good memories of their time at home. I want them to remember the smell of warm cookies coming out of the oven, the taste of homemade bread with butter and jam, and remember all of the projects and experiences we had as a family. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As much as I love my home life, I have another passion. I teach. I teach little people to love learning and especially love literacy. I absolutely love children's books, and teaching reading and writing, using children's literature. I earned my Master's degree in reading and literacy, in 2000. It was a game changer for me. I had always been very interested in math and science, as a teacher. I didn't feel as well equipped to teach reading and writing. I didn't like to read as a child and I was FAR from being a writer, as an adult. I was trying to teach my kids to become life long readers and writers, but hated doing those things myself. After spending two years, doing intense research and writing papers on reading and writing, I had a much better understanding of the way young children learned. I had a clear picture of where I wanted to go with my teaching. I became very interested in Guided Reading, teaching with a balanced reading model, and especially Writer's Workshop. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
In 2004, just after my daughter was born, my school district started our Collaborative Literacy Project. It started as a group of teachers, dedicated to literacy, involved in extensive training, who would become literacy leaders in our school district. I was thrilled to have the opportunity to be involved in the program. I've been able to observe amazing teachers, discuss best practices, receive training and resources, and eventually become a demonstration classroom, hosting teachers from within my school district as well as neighboring school districts. I don't claim to be an expert in literacy, but it's truly a passion of mine, and I'm thrilled to share my beliefs about literacy with others.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have thousands of books in my collection and can't seem to stop adding to it. I'm always finding new mentor texts to use with my young readers and writers. I love to teach units of study, where we can dive into a specific author or genre. I'm always shocked at the amazing conversations we have, even in kindergarten, around the books we are using in our units of study. Kids can be such brilliant thinkers! </div>

We all have our passions in life. My passions are home, family, family and consumer science, early childhood, and literacy. My website and blogs try to encompass all of these areas. The mission of the AAFCS is to help people improve the quality of their lives. My blogs are about helping people make literacy and qualilty home life priorities, thus improving the quality of life. Isn't that what it's all about? At the end of the day, it's all about home and family.</div>

I'm moving to first grade! I spent 11 years teaching first and second grades, before moving to kindergarten, so I'm very comfortable with the change. I'm excited for a new school year, and the opportunity to loop up with a few of my kiddos. I'm an early childhood teacher at heart, and first grade is included in early childhood, so I'm happy. I'm hoping to move back to kindergarten next year! Until then, you can find me at <a href="http://www.homeiswheremystorybegins.com/">www.homeiswheremystorybegins.com</a> or <a href="http://www.lovelaughterandlitercy.blogspot.com/">www.lovelaughterandlitercy.blogspot.com</a>. <br />
For the past few months, kids have been self selecting books for independent reading time. They keep these books in their book bags, and exchange them once a week. <br />
<br />
Some of the books are easy readers, that kids can read on their own.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmvN68jpbf9EQTcOTmvNNrubpWledHHY3tHP1kmhyphenhyphen-WeDKM7zzMQQbHGhFzP4FxChdEujc6wHzOhkaOgg147FcyXO0RNL8Ue3s8X663JGIpxOtShqRxz7zT4QNyihloqi2qpfr56D_6BcD/s1600/DSCN8084.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgmvN68jpbf9EQTcOTmvNNrubpWledHHY3tHP1kmhyphenhyphen-WeDKM7zzMQQbHGhFzP4FxChdEujc6wHzOhkaOgg147FcyXO0RNL8Ue3s8X663JGIpxOtShqRxz7zT4QNyihloqi2qpfr56D_6BcD/s640/DSCN8084.JPG" width="480" /></a><br />
<br />
Some of these books are more challenging, and kids use the pictures to retell the stories.</div>
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHPl-T6POX8sJnZr7DMRfaiN4ZJ6AWrpEJfgN8FXmee4q2VWDXT4Vusut9hL6P7cPpzuJ7X8eRVdNZNJtjZhp_4f7t2FTUV2Yc2GMXF88Ht8Sc3uUhsJIxeK7JTy2cW5IkU4025lm2aF3v/s1600/DSCN8085.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhHPl-T6POX8sJnZr7DMRfaiN4ZJ6AWrpEJfgN8FXmee4q2VWDXT4Vusut9hL6P7cPpzuJ7X8eRVdNZNJtjZhp_4f7t2FTUV2Yc2GMXF88Ht8Sc3uUhsJIxeK7JTy2cW5IkU4025lm2aF3v/s640/DSCN8085.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
<br />
We try to encourage a nice balance when kids self select their books. Over the past few weeks we been trying to build our stamina in reading. Just like runners need to build their stamina for running, readers need to build their stamina for reading independently. Last week, our record was 5 minutes and 35 seconds of quiet reading. This week, we made it all the way to 10 minutes!!! Kids were so proud of themselves. <br />
<br />
I'd like to encourage you to continue reading with your child at home, but also try to add independent reading to their "to do" list. I would suggest 5-10 minutes each day of independent reading time for kindergartners. Set a timer, have your child grab some books, and let them read! Don't worry if they can't read all of the words in a book. There is value in retelling a familiar story as well. Please keep reading to your child as well! It's truly the best thing you can do to help your child develop in literacy!<br />
<br />
Happy reading!</div>

We've been working our way through assessments in kindergarten, preparing for the end of the year report cards. Sight words are just one small piece that we are assessing, but it's hard to take pictures of assessment! We have been checking kids' progress in letters, sounds, phonemic awareness, concepts of print, comprehension, number sense, probability, measurement, problem solving, communication, and MUCH more!<br />
<br />
I am happy to report that kids are doing a great job! Our class tends to be quite strong in letters, sounds, and ability to use their letters and sounds in their writing. We are seeing kids use their sight word knowledge in reading and writing every day. It's so exciting to see such an academically strong group of kindergartners! <br />
<br />
It's our job, as teachers, to use assessment to drive our instruction. There are a couple of areas that we have noticed, the class as a whole, tends to be a little weak in. Those are the areas we will really be focusing on in the few weeks we have left! We will be working on graphing and interpreting our graphs, and we will also be practicing our problem solving and communication in math. <br />
<br />
We don't have many days left, but rest assured, we are using every minute of our time with your kids!<br />
<br />
Happy learning!</div>

<br />
Parents in our classroom have probably heard about new friends. They're kind of a big deal. <br />
<br />
There are 11 of them and we LOVE watching them. The kids have been observing, drawing, and writing all about butterflies. I love the descriptive words kids are using in their writing. They flutter, shiver, and float, according to our kindergartners. <br />

<br />
We will be releasing our friends tomorrow (as long as it's not pouring).<br />

We were so lucky to have a few flowers to add to our butterfly habitat! We are the luckiest teachers in the world and feel SO appreciated. Thank you so much for all of the cards, flowers, and kind comments during Teacher Appreciation Week. We have fabulous students AND parents!</div>

It was a beautiful sunny day in kindergarten, so there just HAD to be an outdoor activity built into the day. We chose to have a bubblerific time outside. We started by reading a book about bubbles.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a data-ved="0CAUQjRw" href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&docid=oD5OjELh2sh3mM&tbnid=mWR8JDapcvWgHM:&ved=0CAUQjRw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fmalchowsreflections.blogspot.com%2F2011%2F05%2Fbubble-day.html&ei=Ad-CUf-5JoeGiQLjpoGwDg&bvm=bv.45960087,d.cGE&psig=AFQjCNGjipf4PL1BrlcF6wR80Jl9FFCG-w&ust=1367617663088292" id="irc_mil" style="border: 0px currentColor;"><img height="300" id="irc_mi" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgOasXPQQnpzldd-1RabaCtYVtYHV2EofMKg-X9jNQ6FI5dead2fRHRHCXJcLKqjwNM4-inhyXQ-toCaxKAGvtzhwQsuv2SKdapuG-_XSSyeXGlq3jZb3rTBE8qB9a2IKMq7Y9J_APF1kGu/s1600/bubble_factory.jpg" style="margin-top: 105px;" width="300" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<u>Pop</u> will be read later, but it's a fabulous book about the science behind bubbles.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a data-ved="0CAUQjRw" href="http://www.google.com/url?sa=i&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&frm=1&source=images&cd=&cad=rja&docid=6ae3c5AyVH6bmM&tbnid=uKM96ZIxxvTQjM:&ved=0CAUQjRw&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.harpercollins.ca%2Fbooks%2FPop-%2F%3Fisbn%3D9780064452083&ei=Kt-CUYu6NIfYigKp1IGgAQ&bvm=bv.45960087,d.cGE&psig=AFQjCNH7ocvZQrqQearjmIN1VxT05IOJkg&ust=1367617704340020" id="irc_mil" style="border: 0px currentColor;"><img height="509" id="irc_mi" src="http://www.harpercollins.com/harperimages/isbn/large/3/9780064452083.jpg" style="margin-top: 0px;" width="628" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Then came the fun part....</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I have some great bubble wands that make giant bubbles. Oh, how the kids love exploring!</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHvkPgf-adM2pCCPMPL-_ExG7JexYGVik9QSNINwoBxX1gd5KHNAb324Sadgyi0-UYCZIpzEWDD_g_la6DQaewt1S9fxn_1Mm-V-Kk-waXdxtt6Gj9SWGx_IE1vlZuXure-COqyCq1mPoF/s1600/DSCN8180.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHvkPgf-adM2pCCPMPL-_ExG7JexYGVik9QSNINwoBxX1gd5KHNAb324Sadgyi0-UYCZIpzEWDD_g_la6DQaewt1S9fxn_1Mm-V-Kk-waXdxtt6Gj9SWGx_IE1vlZuXure-COqyCq1mPoF/s320/DSCN8180.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Of course, it isn't <em>just</em> free play with bubbles. We have other motives. We use the bubble experience to inspire kids to write! We are working on our poetry unit right now, and we love seeing how a little inspiration gets the kids super excited to write!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I can't wait to share a few of their finished poems with you!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Happy writing!</div>

<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
You have probably heard about our new class pets! Personally, I prefer pets who are cute, fuzzy, and cuddly, but fish and snails are part of our curriculum. So, we are loving our new pets even though they don't really have personalities!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaoEvCzcEy4R2kB9iqzOiDQxwpvxNemBA9gT52pLyKiq0mokMUuzRU0Vljevr0CMAWgr2tfQsWYlG6Gqlz1Qhfv-KIsFFmSS7FSmGi5k9L6ean68i1ozy_JpM8Ng9LEbAOmFYkqVae_a01/s1600/DSCN8168.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhaoEvCzcEy4R2kB9iqzOiDQxwpvxNemBA9gT52pLyKiq0mokMUuzRU0Vljevr0CMAWgr2tfQsWYlG6Gqlz1Qhfv-KIsFFmSS7FSmGi5k9L6ean68i1ozy_JpM8Ng9LEbAOmFYkqVae_a01/s320/DSCN8168.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Most of the kids will let the snails sit on their hands. (Yes, we have them wash!)</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The snail races are... well.... very slow going. I don't think it really qualifies as a "race" but we get to watch how they move.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Today we watched how they eat too. Hmmm... now I know where all of the lettuce in my garden goes.</div>

I can't remember the names the kids call these snails, but it was something like Swirly and Shelly. (The snail that was accidentally stepped on today, will now be known as Crush.)</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I'll bet you didn't know that when snails are frightened, they make bubbles! You learn something new every day in kindergarten.</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
The water table is open! Oh, this has been a highlight over the past week! We've been giving kids the chance to explore at the water table. We have boats, funnels, large and small cups, eye droppers, turkey basters, and tubes.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We encourage the kids to explore capacity, objects that sink and float, and experiment with the way water moves.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4q3fF6Ryo2ZLup40XlEpyOqlN0WV67-u8OsOwEgUNQK_Pk32q3k5MHapCfx0VP_sndpCtkPL2Cxwhc9Dn1IBYkLx1mBApp1YM6Rql8DTgrfrXH_slAauwyASxBhECKqINTZj5ciGXBGeO/s1600/DSCN8141.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj4q3fF6Ryo2ZLup40XlEpyOqlN0WV67-u8OsOwEgUNQK_Pk32q3k5MHapCfx0VP_sndpCtkPL2Cxwhc9Dn1IBYkLx1mBApp1YM6Rql8DTgrfrXH_slAauwyASxBhECKqINTZj5ciGXBGeO/s320/DSCN8141.JPG" width="240" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
If you volunteer in the classroom during our center time, I will probably ask you to supervise the water table. The kids LOVE it but, as you can imagine, it can get a little out of hand without an extra pair of eyes. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
As the weather warms up, especially when it gets to be pool season, I would like to encourage you to break out the measuring cups and other plastic kitchen utensils for kids to experiment with!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Happy water play!</div>

We'd like to introduce you to a few new friends in our classroom!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This is Goldie, Cutie, Carly, and Tiny.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEDqI3h2MzoUUeqdFVPN8ZE3eOHv03qaO8ETMiYkbEwcqhP1zmA9Pn-4rgQpi1XMtHrH85vxYKdNLZlPWM2-krTLLD9UZVdsRvNzche_rVwRmJeYkOUj-dYJ0Gi4ebLV413Cr-opQNMZRR/s1600/DSCN8148.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhEDqI3h2MzoUUeqdFVPN8ZE3eOHv03qaO8ETMiYkbEwcqhP1zmA9Pn-4rgQpi1XMtHrH85vxYKdNLZlPWM2-krTLLD9UZVdsRvNzche_rVwRmJeYkOUj-dYJ0Gi4ebLV413Cr-opQNMZRR/s640/DSCN8148.JPG" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Our new friends are part of our Animals 2x2 science curriculum (and they will be looking for new homes at the end of the year). We've been writing about our goldfish every day.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We are learning to observe like scientists and draw exactly what we see. Sometimes it's really hard, when you're in kindergarten, to not draw a blue goldfish or a fish with stripes. We are learning to make observations.</div>

We've also been researching all of the things fish need to live. </div>

I'm pretty sure the fish are the highlight of the school year so far. It has been a lot of fun and a fabulous learning experience for the kids!</div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Oh, the fun we have in kindergarten!!!</div>

A few weeks ago we started working on learning to spell our color words. As a follow up, we made some rice rainbows during centers/choice time.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2S1StkF0Jlv_kbR93SkHAxsPQHMiie66XJrphjLqa4FAFXtLNp-dPNkpeyfZpJQGwMzTekQaO4XvVsepK393GmeRZZ2hvNqJwBD1SQGkwj20ySkz-Vr1tWhKpWnMB-Vj_PR4kEKi8hO5U/s1600/DSCN8133.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj2S1StkF0Jlv_kbR93SkHAxsPQHMiie66XJrphjLqa4FAFXtLNp-dPNkpeyfZpJQGwMzTekQaO4XvVsepK393GmeRZZ2hvNqJwBD1SQGkwj20ySkz-Vr1tWhKpWnMB-Vj_PR4kEKi8hO5U/s640/DSCN8133.JPG" width="480" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
It's so great to hear the kids sing the spelling of the color words as they make their rainbows.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5qmhb-R86rshTo2ymG-vtjOUH8UjcoaeyPmYgMr0-UHV2JG46JHDAKxAR1CNsPhiPVe_QAarwKLM-RJu4lpaDLUnQcTYLZ2hBPwehhXMBaBW8b9y8Q_OTA5G7n4-zJTKNBO-2f2BwO-Yh/s1600/DSCN8135.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj5qmhb-R86rshTo2ymG-vtjOUH8UjcoaeyPmYgMr0-UHV2JG46JHDAKxAR1CNsPhiPVe_QAarwKLM-RJu4lpaDLUnQcTYLZ2hBPwehhXMBaBW8b9y8Q_OTA5G7n4-zJTKNBO-2f2BwO-Yh/s320/DSCN8135.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
I love working with colored rice. Not only is it pretty, but having to pinch those tiny little grains of rice is great for small motor development.</div>
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivfe625wrOYhZNjE8gZLj1XPu0UARsQOpWdaCP5o_grgKVFePa0liorIfZs_wuCPQWhO45WaB66Li4Aso3LalYqoH2-06YwQCIvG0RXR1j3DyKolan5qjWJMJdmG3tpmc0AZP50UGijOsy/s1600/DSCN8136.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="240" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivfe625wrOYhZNjE8gZLj1XPu0UARsQOpWdaCP5o_grgKVFePa0liorIfZs_wuCPQWhO45WaB66Li4Aso3LalYqoH2-06YwQCIvG0RXR1j3DyKolan5qjWJMJdmG3tpmc0AZP50UGijOsy/s320/DSCN8136.JPG" width="320" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Happy Rainbow Day!</div>

Well, I think it's a toss up! I can't decide the kids' favorite way to practice sight words. They love singing and dancing to their <u><a href="http://hilltopkindergartenkids.blogspot.com/2011/03/heidisongs.html">Heidisongs</a></u> in the morning, but we also love shaving cream sight word practice too. Oh, but wait... now we've added sight word bingo to the mix!</div>

The Bricklayer's Snack was our writing project for the day. We started by reading the book/rhyme Peanut Butter and Jelly. Be sure to ask your child to sing it for you! Ask any kindergartner. Center time is the best part of the day. It's the time of day when we have developmental play. There are blocks, cars, puppets, and home center. We have the light table and sand table open. Kids just love to explore and learn. Last week we set up a painting table, but we resisted the urge to put out every color of the rainbow.<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvIFURXJU5StkCxmyuwCBHkuzw7CQw2ULFeUbQUu9R___MqLM3WR3ZYVX7nxDQ_k6E7gj9e6xFej75F-R8hPfDphuyc3vh93FHeJz8u1meqLyiZ8qnz5WJU4ob9g_FiYRx9cQ8HAHECoxe/s1600/IMG_0563.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgvIFURXJU5StkCxmyuwCBHkuzw7CQw2ULFeUbQUu9R___MqLM3WR3ZYVX7nxDQ_k6E7gj9e6xFej75F-R8hPfDphuyc3vh93FHeJz8u1meqLyiZ8qnz5WJU4ob9g_FiYRx9cQ8HAHECoxe/s640/IMG_0563.JPG" width="480" /></a><br />
Instead, we experimented with black and white.</div>
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">

The kids mixed their paints and created. They were creative and curious.</div>

<br />
We had a little bit of math fun in kindergarten on Wednesday. Our math curriculum asks us to create number combinations with<br />
the<br />
same<br />
old<br />
number<br />
tiles<br />
over<br />
and<br />
over.<br />
<br />
Well, we decided to have a little fun with our number combinations of 6. We played Bears in a Cave with Teddy Grahams and <strike>paper cups</strike> bear caves.</div>
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGJCwSeZNDBQE2v2aV2iyynZeNecEGUTgdmqV8zzANlrmScg8RQ_ZmT1npVTDzoAqABrfWff02C1hzKSzsxWIbw2t_fUv7L2Ti_b-fu0zv9-aDCbRDpd11L7E0Z3Sz5hK-ETGDjtYy3_GW/s1600/DSCN8106.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjGJCwSeZNDBQE2v2aV2iyynZeNecEGUTgdmqV8zzANlrmScg8RQ_ZmT1npVTDzoAqABrfWff02C1hzKSzsxWIbw2t_fUv7L2Ti_b-fu0zv9-aDCbRDpd11L7E0Z3Sz5hK-ETGDjtYy3_GW/s400/DSCN8106.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
The kids were SO engaged in creating their number combinations! It probably helped that they were allowed to eat their math manipulatives when they were finished with math.</div>
<div style="clear: both; text-align: CENTER;">
<a href="http://picasa.google.com/blogger/" target="ext"><img align="middle" alt="Posted by Picasa" border="0" src="http://photos1.blogger.com/pbp.gif" style="-moz-background-clip: initial; -moz-background-inline-policy: initial; -moz-background-origin: initial; background: transparent none repeat scroll 0% 50%; border: 0px none; padding: 0px;" /></a></div>

The kids were SO excited on Valentine's Day. Honestly, I've never seen a class as excited. Their enthusiasm was absolutely fabulous! We started out with Conversation Heart math.<br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9pIVLSk5wk6qrf184wAAYC37ZMJjRolt2Jc8-OoZrq_v2uJUg7JNDGjlUdi4P9TJ6esPQoqkNY8O6g5sLspo8g7Re5vzwk_d9mcLkisb7e46auF4wjgpfJR92ZnC1WmQt5LqpWCKrR7CT/s1600/DSCN8104.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9pIVLSk5wk6qrf184wAAYC37ZMJjRolt2Jc8-OoZrq_v2uJUg7JNDGjlUdi4P9TJ6esPQoqkNY8O6g5sLspo8g7Re5vzwk_d9mcLkisb7e46auF4wjgpfJR92ZnC1WmQt5LqpWCKrR7CT/s400/DSCN8104.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
There was graphing.</div>
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs9O_fETYcUh1HYKkANXMCNYuJSoIZ4w08s9XVjRnh1S2eH2chVn3tR8y9-sA770wP5qo00EhxuDvAkv9tmG2NzmePmmVRLpp7bnFZPZocmHLDwCD4q40WkS6IuQ9zewzqEYsLN0FwjQgc/s1600/DSCN8103.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjs9O_fETYcUh1HYKkANXMCNYuJSoIZ4w08s9XVjRnh1S2eH2chVn3tR8y9-sA770wP5qo00EhxuDvAkv9tmG2NzmePmmVRLpp7bnFZPZocmHLDwCD4q40WkS6IuQ9zewzqEYsLN0FwjQgc/s400/DSCN8103.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
We did some estimating, counting, and sorting.</div>
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsYPf9HM-I3yTBSU0nt_skMeGGa18G_sAoUJZzhixAKI5CM4K8tjRcDNF-b0AQC2n0f7H2qUChKqxi_06US1yJsbcjahuKCOIq4PQWZbZANunJktBpLjGZSFV3-_YdndQDVbKD0S89bo_a/s1600/DSCN8102.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgsYPf9HM-I3yTBSU0nt_skMeGGa18G_sAoUJZzhixAKI5CM4K8tjRcDNF-b0AQC2n0f7H2qUChKqxi_06US1yJsbcjahuKCOIq4PQWZbZANunJktBpLjGZSFV3-_YdndQDVbKD0S89bo_a/s400/DSCN8102.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
There was a bit of writing as well.</div>
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyCc5VumeGPCPXcHG9boehcpjzvoobJmiQUGG8Ovw_G2SbqlIEMG6cV4CMfUtmvwE33RVDl1SsobN-xmY0zxt3T_d97gMD3XZcC9yHDqvhivFFQIyt0X_dJaDZFHwdJFz4ofhMTj_3U5Si/s1600/DSCN8101.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiyCc5VumeGPCPXcHG9boehcpjzvoobJmiQUGG8Ovw_G2SbqlIEMG6cV4CMfUtmvwE33RVDl1SsobN-xmY0zxt3T_d97gMD3XZcC9yHDqvhivFFQIyt0X_dJaDZFHwdJFz4ofhMTj_3U5Si/s400/DSCN8101.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
The day ended with cookie decorating, cupcakes, and passing out Valentine cards. </div>
<div style="margin: 0px auto 10px; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_dIc-Gi1FFZ6Zo5h-yvbKnHAvBXb_w7lGcg_T37uDulRyXNPStvOO_l0vcqvjcj-rUT20Ke2KBLM8PZ-OwL-YcPG-5i3iW5nA38v8ru7QX0jrnhrSDhl2k6ih7YmP37p3VtaNZbetUAS0/s1600/DSCN8105.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi_dIc-Gi1FFZ6Zo5h-yvbKnHAvBXb_w7lGcg_T37uDulRyXNPStvOO_l0vcqvjcj-rUT20Ke2KBLM8PZ-OwL-YcPG-5i3iW5nA38v8ru7QX0jrnhrSDhl2k6ih7YmP37p3VtaNZbetUAS0/s400/DSCN8105.JPG" /></a><br />
<br />
For the record, they were allowed to eat 5 conversation hearts, and they had to choose between eating a cookie or a cupcake. They got to take the other things home, but I didn't want to send them home on a sugar high. I have your backs, parents.<br />
<br />
Happy (belated) Valentine's Day!</div>

Just about every day, in full day kindergarten, we have time for developmental centers. There is so much to value in free play. Kids have the chance to be creative, interact with their peers, solve problems, and learn which activities they truly enjoy.<br />
<br />
I snapped this photo the other day, of one small portion of the classroom, during center time. It shows a wide variety of activities going on.<br />
(Sorry if the photo looks blurry. I pixilated out the kids' faces.)<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6t0ZA928bF7w4BNuEZdvLDWX_CqiYTRgQOh9fsscURx6qRETIuAt0dfVY74_6AeyXgOnxo9mbAESWT4FpqiIS3Ya_GQ3_ckOnT_OYYo1Zc0gWspzWsJkX1Kv3c49cujLBqUOZeWa2mpdu/s1600/DSCN8090-001.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg6t0ZA928bF7w4BNuEZdvLDWX_CqiYTRgQOh9fsscURx6qRETIuAt0dfVY74_6AeyXgOnxo9mbAESWT4FpqiIS3Ya_GQ3_ckOnT_OYYo1Zc0gWspzWsJkX1Kv3c49cujLBqUOZeWa2mpdu/s400/DSCN8090-001.JPG" /></a><br />
Just in this one photo you can see a few boys engaged in dramatic play in our home center/fruit market, two kids painting at the easel, two kids playing reading games on the computer, and two kids exploring the light table. Learning in kindergarten comes in so many forms. During this 20 minute block, kids learn so many different skills!<br />
<br />
Sometimes, it's all about Playful Learning!</div>

Recently, we sent home two sets of sight word cards with each child. These cards are for you to keep at home. This is the list of 42 words that we expect our kindergarten students to know at the end of the year. <br />
<br />
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmc1GMnqZhcwxtlZZMTaRlsxD1G-1BRh5_IKdeaIOAa7VXaFeCUUM8kx_FrSdWEK-KxSdl5NqKJr4MnSQQUvEzR8QCXrEbwVcW7HZ4hyphenhyphenr6ZMkiAfnFrXf3zbHIPJJ3_bRi9TJrxw73HJC1/s1600/DSCN8089.JPG"><img alt="" border="0" height="480" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmc1GMnqZhcwxtlZZMTaRlsxD1G-1BRh5_IKdeaIOAa7VXaFeCUUM8kx_FrSdWEK-KxSdl5NqKJr4MnSQQUvEzR8QCXrEbwVcW7HZ4hyphenhyphenr6ZMkiAfnFrXf3zbHIPJJ3_bRi9TJrxw73HJC1/s640/DSCN8089.JPG" width="640" /></a><br />
At my house, when the kids were in kindergarten and first grade, we would use these cards to play Memory. Remember that game when you were little? I would encourage you to start with a smaller number of cards. Having 84 word cards on the floor in front of you seems quite overwhelming. I would suggest choosing 10 words, to start, and finding their matches. That way you only have 20 total cards staring at you. (By the way, I have found that my memory must be declining as I get older. My kids would always beat me, even when I was truly trying.)<br />
<br />
Another thing you may want to do, is use these cards as flash cards. You can keep one set at home and one set in the car. I found that this ended whining in the car. As soon as my kids started to whine about being bored, I said, "Hey, let's practice those sight words!" Voila! No more whining!<br />
<br />
One last tip for practicing sight words.<br />
(and I LOVE this idea)<br />
Write all of the words on your child's pillow case, with a permanent marker. (Buy a cheap pillow case first!) Then, every night at bedtime, ask your child to pick a handful of words to read. It's quick and easy, and you'll also have a visual reminder to practice the sight words every single night! My kids loved this!<br />
<br />
By the way, the green folders that were sent home are yours to keep. We thought they would be a good place for you to keep your child's work. The name cards are for practicing first and last name with proper letter formation. The sight word practice sheets are something we are going to use in the classroom, but I accidentally copied a whole bunch. Rather than recycle them, I thought you might want to have your child practice the words at home. No need to return these two items.<br />
<br />
Also, if the writing homework is too much, please feel free to modify! You are your child's first and best teacher! You know how much is too much for them. Kindergarten homework should not be torture! Have them do what they can and then set a new goal for the following week. We will only have this writing homework for a few weeks. That being said, I would certainly encourage writing at home even when the homework ends! Kids love to write cards, books, notes to friends, and even grocery lists.<br />
<br />
Happy reading and writing!</div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
We're just wrapping up the first semester, in the Edmonds School District. Report cards will be coming home at the end of the week and parents are anxious to see if their kids are meeting grade level expectations. What are kids expected to do by this time of the year?</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Here is a writing sample that shows what most kindergartners are able to do right now. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVGOY3o3BI8Hw3xoEPO3zio8mrnH5WPikraS5KiBwN6toAjVlF2uENHzLXeYYeuBjqS6HVw0G_B416gM_Oyb4mANvE6zNOGy8WItSBSCeAnJrp_o7xOy3WM8Nhh77964ohOp6phmw5Yul-/s1600/Top.BMP.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" oea="true" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVGOY3o3BI8Hw3xoEPO3zio8mrnH5WPikraS5KiBwN6toAjVlF2uENHzLXeYYeuBjqS6HVw0G_B416gM_Oyb4mANvE6zNOGy8WItSBSCeAnJrp_o7xOy3WM8Nhh77964ohOp6phmw5Yul-/s640/Top.BMP.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
This student identified a topic she wanted to write about. She drew a picture and was able to write a sentence to match. Her words contained the beginning sounds. She is starting to be able to spell some of our sight words. I notice that she's beginning to use lowercase letters in her writing and she's even using spaces in between her words. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Just so you know, we don't use writing prompts very often on kindergarten. We structure our writing time in a Writer's Workshop model. About once a month I ask kids to write from a prompt. It's a great tool to see their growth and share with other teachers at our grade level. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Writing homework will begin coming home in the next few weeks. (We'll be doing writing instead of math homework for a few weeks.) I hope you'll keep these expectations in mind as your child writes at home.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
By the way, by the end of the year your child should be able to:</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
*write multiple sentences on a single topic</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
*work on piece of writing over multiple days</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
*use beginning, middle, and ending sounds in words</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
*use many sight words in writing</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
*use consistent spaces between words</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
*use mostly lowercase letters</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
Happy writing!</div>
